Jim Strickler to be honored as Tigard’s First Citizen

Jim Strickler, Vice President of Logistics at Blue Bird Transfer, has been selected as Tigard’s First Citizen. This award is given to an individual who has made in-depth, long-term volunteer contributions to the Tigard community over the years. The winner is active, involved, interested, and enthusiastic about making Tigard a nice place to live and work. This individual excels in any area of unpaid endeavor of education, social services, youth work, and community improvement of public services. This award is given in the spirit of all volunteers who remain unknown. Jim joins the ranks of those previously honored in continually striving to improve the Tigard Area.

Jim Strickler exemplifies these characteristics by his active involvement in the Tigard Community across a broad range of social service, non-profit, and community activities. Over the last decade, Jim has been actively involved in multiple facets of our community ranging from business activities and fundraising, to pastoral services and service on the board of a non-profit organization that supports families in need. He has been actively involved with the Tigard Chamber, Good Neighbor Center, Rotary Club of Tigard, Westside Chapel, and Young’s Funeral Home.

A Tigard Chamber member since 2000, Jim has served on the Ambassadors Committee since 2009. He has taken part in many activities at the chamber, including the Emily Bohart Golf Tournament and the Bowl-o-Rama, and he can always be counted on for his support at Good Morning Tigard events. An avid proponent of the chamber, Jim believes all businesses can benefit from chamber membership and encourages members to support each other in many ways. As an example of his support for the chamber, Jim donated his personal time and leveraged connections to get a 20-foot desk disassembled and removed from the chamber at no cost, a great benefit for the chamber.

Jim currently serves as Board Chair for the Good Neighbor Center (GNC), which is a non-profit organization focused on providing short-term housing for families who find themselves homeless. GNC is a place where families are transformed and can become self-sufficient again. A member of the board since 2004, Jim has been on the Personnel Committee since 2005 and also served as the Vice-Chair of the board from 2009-2010. When asked why he serves here, Jim replied: “It’s all about the kids, helping them to get a better start in life.”

Jim is also active in the faith community through his current volunteer work at West Side Chapel, occasionally speaking in the Wednesday evening services, and leading the monthly men’s prayer meetings. He serves Young’s Funeral Home and other local funeral homes as a funeral chaplain providing services for Christian and non-religious funerals. In keeping with his faith focus, Jim founded Living Way Fellowship in 2004 and served as its pastor through 2010. As pastor he led the church to partner for several years with the Tigard Optimist Club’s Annual Youth Walk-A-Thon.

Jim gives back to the Tigard Community through his involvement with the Rotary Club of Tigard, of which he has been a member for the last nine years. For the last four years he has served as Sergeant-at-Arms, and from 2006-2008 he served on the board as the Vocational Services Chair. Jim is instrumental in fundraising for the Tigard High School Annual Achievement Banquet sponsored by Rotary, now in its 46th year. In 2010 Jim was selected as Rotarian of the Year for the Rotary Club of Tigard.

Active in his neighborhood as well, Jim has been the Board President of the Calway Hill Home Owners Association since his election in 2008.

When asked why he should be selected as Tigard’s First Citizen, the person nominating him responded, “When asked to take part in an activity, Jim is always willing to go the extra mile to help in any way he can.”

Jim’s other interests include reading, playing golf, and taking walks with his wife. He and his wife Tina have been married almost 32 years. Their son Josh and his wife Christa live in Kirkland, WA.

Please join us in congratulating Jim Strickler on this well-deserved award. The Tigard’s First Citizen award will be formally presented with other Tigard volunteer and business awards at Tigard’s 2012 Shining Stars Community Awards Celebration, sponsored by Platinum Title Sponsor West Coast Bank and held on Friday, April 27th from 6-9 p.m. at Embassy Suites – Washington Square, event location host. Grocery Outlet- King City named 2012 Tigard Shining Stars Chamber Business of the Year

Grocery Outlet of King City, owned by Tony and Tina Slyter since 2008 has been selected as the 2012 Tigard Shining Stars Chamber Business of the Year.  Tony and Tina also own the recently opened Newberg Grocery Outlet.  The Chamber Business of the Year Award is made to a Tigard Chamber business who has made in-depth contributions to the Tigard community through their business. The winner is active, involved, interested, and enthusiastic about continuing to make Tigard a destination of choice for local business. Nominee must be a chamber member in good standing.

Tony and Tina with their Grocery Outlet stores are active in supporting numerous organizations/causes within the Tigard Community including King City Lions Club, Tigard High Boosters, Tigard High athletics, arts, drama and the band, Youth Transition Group, Operation Christmas Glory, The Foundation for Tigard Tualatin Schools, the Save the Pools Drive, Habitat for Humanity, St. Vincent De Paul and Tigard Covenant Church Food Pantries.  Stretching a little farther afield they have supported both the Oregon Food Bank and Vernonia Flood victims.

Tony and Tina are committed to supporting their local community and neighbors in need.  This is evidenced by their month long July 2011, Independence from Hunger campaign.  Through this company wide event, Grocery Outlet King City and its customers donated food to both St. Vincent De Paul and Tigard Covenant Church Food Pantries.  The store also was set up to collect cash donations directly for these food pantries and to distribute information on hunger, food insecurity and resources available for help.   In keeping with this theme they also provided discounted shopping rates for the local King City Lions club who raised $400 in support of West Coast Bank’s Food Drive and purchased food from the King City Grocery Outlet.  That food was then donated directly to Tigard Covenant Church Food Pantry.  Again focused on hunger, King City Grocery Outlet donated 2 fresh apples to the Oregon Food bank for every 5 pounds of apples purchased by customer during a 4 month campaign.  Over 17,500 pounds of apples were donated by Grocery Outlet King City to the Oregon Food bank.  The Oregon Food bank supports food pantries across all Oregon counties.

Big supporters of Tigard High School, Tony and Tina have been actively involved in supporting  the Tigard High Boosters through either food or monetary donations and have also supported Tigard High athletics, arts, drama, and the band.  As part of the Save Our Pools drive, Tony and Tina dedicated 10% of their revenue over a two day period and wrote a check for $5,000 to the drive.  Additionally, their store served as a hub for a bottle drive that supported the Foundation for Tigard Tualatin Schools.  Continuing their youth focus, Tony and Tina also donate to a local group called Youth Transition Group which deals with troubled and homeless teens.

As a King City Lion, Tony was the impetus and got the ball rolling on a project at the District level within the Lions to organize food and other supplies for families impacted by the Vernonia floods, including donations from their store, King City Grocery Outlet.  In support of our troops overseas, the Slyter’s donated all the non-perishable food to go in 230 care packages put together by Operation Christmas Glory, a local Tigard Non-Profit, to troops serving in Iraq and Afghanistan in December 2011.

In keeping with their continued focus on community, King City Grocery Outlet fills the kitchens of local Habitat for Humanity homes in a program supported by a partnership between Grocery Outlet and Habitat for Humanity.  As part of their participation in the program, operators stock the home with food and supplies to fill the kitchen cupboards, pantry, laundry room and bathrooms.  They also donate a gift certificate to the family to shop for fresh produce and other perishables.  Local operators also provide lunches, snacks and bottled water for the volunteers on the HFH construction, and also support their employees working on the project.

When asked why they do what they do in terms of giving back to the community the Slyter’s said “We do it because we are blessed, God has really fed our business.  It is His, not ours.  We are in this to make a living, but not to get rich. We feel it is our calling to share what we reap with the surrounding community.  We love this community, are enamored with our customer base and have a special bond with seniors who shop at our store”.

Please join us in congratulating Tony and Tina Slyter on this well-deserved award. The Chamber Business of the Year award will be formally presented with other Tigard volunteer and business awards at Tigard’s 2012 Shining Stars Community Awards Celebration, sponsored by Platinum Title Sponsor West Coast Bank and held on Friday, April 27th from 6-9 p.m. at Embassy Suites – Washington Square, event location host. Anthony Quach selected as 2012 Tigard Shining Stars Youth Volunteer of the Year

Anthony Quach has been selected as the 2012 Shining Stars Tigard Youth Volunteer of the Year, named in honor of former Mayor Jim Nicoli, who passed away in 2000. Mayor Nicoli’s dedication to the youth of our community was a fitting way to honor his name and award a youth in our community who volunteers to make a difference. Many young people in Tigard are active in volunteer efforts and it is our pleasure to acknowledge their contributions of dedication, energy and community spirit. They are the future!

Anthony exemplifies these characteristics as he is actively involved in helping others within the community and Tigard High School through National Honor Society, Key Club, Asian Club, Spanish National Honor Society, D.A.R.E  camp counselor (3 summers), Link Krew Leader, Family Fest Volunteer, Tigard High Canned Food Drive and fundraising for  a local TTSD cancer victim.  With his NHS and Key Club activities, Anthony has given over 150 volunteer hours alone.

As a Link Krew Leader, a Tigard High school leadership program that assists incoming freshman with transition to high school, Anthony is actively involved with helping fellow students.  As a DARE camp counselor for the last 3 summers, Anthony volunteers at the camp which is committed to supporting middle school students build self esteem through interactions with positive role models.

During his Junior year, Anthony lead the charge in an intense competition for Tigard High’s Canned Food Drive, exceeded his goal and collected 16,000 pounds of canned food for Loaves and Fishes.  His ability to engage groups came to the forefront in a second money-raising effort, this time to assist a middle school student in the the Tigard Tualatin School District fighting cancer.  Anthony and others at Tigard High ended up raising thousands of dollars to help this family.

In addition to his community involvement Anthony has also been recognized as an Academic All American, a Varsity Scholar Athlete, is active in Tigard High School Student Government, Speech and Debate team, Cross Country, Track and Field and Basketball and the Principals’ Student Advisory Council and will graduate among the top in his class with a Full Diploma from Tigard High’s International Baccalaureate Program.

With a natural inclination to help others, it is no surprise that Anthony  is seeking a career in medicine with a focus on pediatrics and a plan to either work for Doctors Without Borders, or for the Institute for Pediatric Innovation (IPI).  Doctors Without Borders provides medical humanitarian aid to countries threatened by natural disasters and armed conflicts, while IPI focuses on improving the quality of healthcare for children through methods like product innovation.  As you can see, Anthony plans to make a difference not only in the community, but in the world.

Please join us in congratulating Anthony on this well-deserved award. The Youth Volunteer of the Year award will be formally presented with other Tigard volunteer and business awards at Tigard’s 2012 Shining Stars Community Awards Celebration, sponsored by Platinum Title Sponsor West Coast Bank and held on Friday, April 27th from 6-9 p.m. at Embassy Suites – Washington Square, event location host. Margie Greene Named 2012 Tigard Shining Stars “From the Heart” Volunteer of the Year

Margie Greene has been selected as the 2012 Tigard Shining Stars “From the Heart” Volunteer of the Year, named in honor of Jim Hartman.  The “From The Heart” award honors a person who has dedicated their time and energy to a specific cause in the Tigard community.  Jim Hartman set the standard for this award by his example of giving from the heart to his community.  This person gives willingly, energetically and consistently.  This person might be well known or might be a “quiet” volunteer, unrecognized until now, but always gives “from the heart”!  This person may have worked on the same project for many years.

Margie Greene has dedicated countless hours to the Foundation for Tigard Tualatin Schools. As the volunteer president for the organization for the past several years she has committed herself to the equivalent of an unpaid part time job on behalf of the children in the Tigard Tualatin School District.

Through her efforts and encouragement, this nonprofit was able to grant each TTSD school a base $9,000 grant this year. Additionally, there have been funds available for the schools to apply to the Foundation for other grants. This is due, in large part, to Margie’s support of efforts such as the recent phone outreach which raised an unprecedented $65,000.

In addition to her TTSD work, Margie serves as co-chair for the Art In The Burbs, a Foundation for Tigard Tualatin Schools fundraiser and volunteers for Tigard High’s and Fowler Middle School’s PSOs.  She also co-founded Tigard’s Youth Track club with her husband Ralph Greene.  All of these efforts center around Margie’s efforts, on behalf of the children in our district, show that her motivations stem “from the heart.”  Margie and her husband Ralph have 4 children, one a recent grad of Tigard High School, the other 3 attending TTSD schools.

When asked why she has given so much time to the Tigard Tualatin School District and its Foundation, Margie said, “Volunteering just feels natural to me.  Perhaps because I grew up watching my own mother  volunteer much of her time to my school and other community events.  I feel as she did, that education has an effect on everyone’s life, sometimes in subtle ways of which we are not always aware.  With these changing times, I would like to help keep education as strong and relevant as possible.  The positive impact it has on our kids and our community is immeasurable.”

Please join us in congratulating Margie Greene on this well deserved award.  The “From the Heart”, Tigard Volunteer of the Year award will be presented with other Tigard volunteer and business awards at Tigard’s 2012 Shining Stars Community Awards Celebration, sponsored by Platinum Title Sponsor West Coast Bank and held on Friday, April 27th from 6-9 p.m. at Embassy Suites – Washington Square, event location host. Tigard’s 2012 Shining Stars Community Awards Chamber Volunteer of the Year Recipient Named

Brian Castellanos, an Associate Agency Manager with COUNTRY Financial®, is the 2012 Tigard Chamber Volunteer of the Year Award recipient.  The Chamber Volunteer of the Year Award honors a Chamber member who has volunteered many hours of time, talent and energy to the success and growth of the Tigard Chamber.  Bert Tousey and his example of Chamber volunteerism is commitment at its best.  The award recipient is an example of an active member who has sustained their efforts on behalf of the Chamber over a long period of time.  By their efforts, they have made the Tigard Chamber more effective in serving the Tigard community.

Brian exemplifies this award through his numerous volunteer activities with the Tigard Chamber.  Brian quickly engaged with the chamber after joining in May 2010.  His volunteer contributions to the Tigard Chamber are numerous and include:

  • Helped repaint the chamber meeting room in September of 2010, along with several other volunteers, giving up part of his Saturday.
  • Leveraged his connections to get the chamber a landscaper who provided a cost effective solution for removal of a dead hedge in the chamber landscaping.  That landscaper has since joined the chamber and maintains our landscaping on a semi-annual basis.
  • Since 2010, Brian has served on the newly formed Fundraising Subcommittee whose role is to look for creative ways to generate additional funds that the chamber can put towards member programs. This has resulted in some residual $’s for the chamber.
  • Was the Title Sponsor for the Sept 2010 Tigard Chamber Annual Golf Tournament  and also joined the Golf Committee.
  • In 2011 Brian stepped up again as the Title Sponsor for the chamber Golf Tournament, and acted as the unofficial chair of the committee. In this role he spent countless hours connecting with the golf course, negotiating tournament pricing/deposits, pro shop credits, clarifying details on cart sponsorships etc.  He also engaged other members in sponsoring, injected some new game holes to enhance the tourney and gathered high value raffle prizes.  Brian set a personal goal to really blow the doors off the tourney. The results were a significant increase in per player and sponsor income as compared to the 2010 tourney.
  • Despite a recent move to a Beaverton office location, Brian has agreed to chair the Golf Committee for 2012 and planning for this years event has already begun.
  • In keeping with his ambassadorial role with the chamber, Brian also became a Member of the Chamber Board of Directors  for the 2011-2012 fiscal year, attending monthly board meetings to review and discuss chamber business in addition to his other chamber volunteer activities.
  • In his tenure with the Tigard Chamber, Brian has recruited 4 businesses into the chamber.  He is always connecting and advocating on behalf of the chamber and has expanded this to include advocacy of the Tigard Area Farmers markets to businesses interested in sponsorship.

Brian always brings great energy and a positive outlook to all his interactions with the chamber.  Without volunteers like Brian, the Tigard Chamber would not be the vital, growing organization it is today.

The Bert Tousey, Tigard Chamber Volunteer of the Year award will be formally presented with other Tigard volunteer and business awards at Tigard’s 2012 Shining Stars Community Awards Celebration sponsored by Platinum Title Sponsor West Coast Bank and held on Friday, April 27th from 6-9 p.m. at Embassy Suites –Washington Square, event location host.  With a theme of “Escape to a Night in the Caribbean”, thisCaribbeanthemed dinner event includes dinner, silent auction, steel drum music, limbo, awards, and more.  Tickets are only $35/person, dress is casual, tropical.  Come Join Us and celebrate Tigard.

Keeping Customer/Client Identity Information Safe – Oregon Identify Theft Act requirements

This is an excerpt from a great lunch and learn we had today at the Tigard Chamber on the Oregon Identity Theft Act and what is required to protect consumer/customer/client identify information.   This information was presented by Diane Childs with the State of Oregon, Dept of Consumer & Business Services.

The Oregon Identity Theft act applies to businesses, nonprofits and government entities  that are collecting, maintaining and sharing personal identifying information from clients, consumers, and customers.  This includes social security numbers, drivers license numbers and financial account numbers such as checking accounts, credit card numbers etc.

Oregon ranked  # 30 in identity theft crime, we used to be #13, so things have improved dramatically.  The top methods of identity theft are:

  • 19.5% hacking
  • 16.9% insider theft
  • 15.7% data on the move. a laptop, thumb drive or other mobile electronic device with personal info that gets lost or stolen

“Personal identifying info” is classified as someone’s name in conjunction with their:

  • Social Security Number
  • Driver License number
  • Passport Number
  • Financial account info

A “security breach is when personal identifying info gets out in computer format.

How to protect consumer data - To safe guard info you must develop, implement and maintain reasonable safeguards including proper disposal of that information.

Develop a working plan

  • Top down
  • All electronic systems should be included
  • Apply to all employees and users and their devices
  • “clean desk policy” personal identifying info is not lying around, you now where it is
  • Assess - know where your information is and who has access to it.
  • Protect – locking file cabinet
  • Reduce – getting rid of documents
  • Train – people know that you need clients and customers to trust you
  • Detect – issues with our computer, go with your gut
  • Destroy – shred, get rid of info on hard drives copy machines have hard drives

For those under Graham-Leach-Bliley and HIPPA you should follow safeguards required under these acts.

  • for employees follow Oregon law for you employees

To prevent theft of social security numbers follow these steps:

  • No posting or displaying
  • No printing on materials  sent thru mail if not requested unless redacted
  • No printing consumer name and SSN on a card used by consumer to access products or services

*Exceptions records required by state or federal law

If sensitive data stolen

  • If computerized personal identifying info is stolen send info to customer as soon as possible
  • Notify credit reporting agencies if more than 1000 people impacted
  • Use Mail, email, phone

From attendee dialogue:

From a local banker – If you have business checking and credit/debit cards associated with it , need online banking as you only have 24 hours to catch fraudulent charges if you want them reversed.  If find later than that, may not get reimbursed.  Check your accounts daily.

From an web designer - Gas Stations and restaurants only place where your credit card walks away for the payment to be transacted, something to think about.  Maybe take it up yourself.

You can use Ic3.gov to report complaints on bogus emails searching for personal identifying information.  There have been some recently posing as if they were from PayPal, UPS, Fedex and the IRS.

Never sell anything again, and watch your business soar!

I get regular e-mails/articles from Barry Molz, a business author, consultant and speaker who I had the good fortune to meet and hear speak last year at the Oregon State Chamber Conference.  He did a recent post on what selling does and does not entail and I thought it made a lot of sense and was worth sharing.  His key points in his article are about what causes customers to buy your product or service, things I’ve learned before in various sales and coaching sessions but are worth hearing again.

Customers buy when:

1. They are in pain.

2. They have the money to solve that pain.

As he states in his article “As a small business owner, the first task is to be able to describe the pain that your company solves and identify who has the money to solve that pain. In fact, this should be practiced as your “elevator speech.”

The key takeaway of his article is to forget “selling” and focus on building “relationships”, with a lot of actionable recommendations about how you can implement this in your business.  So take a few minutes, read the full article at the link and then make a plan as to at least one thing you will implement from his recommendations in your business.

Never Sell Anything Again – And Watch Your Business Soar!

Enjoy,

Debi
